Family Law - Critique of an Opposing Expert:
We were approached by one of our family-law lawyer
referral sources to assist with a situation in which the
non-business-owner spouse needed comfort with respect to
the valuation assessment prepared by the business-owning
spouses’ professional valuation consultant. At a total
cost far below that which would be required to prepare a
complete independent analysis from scratch, we reviewed
the other experts’ report, prepared a series of questions,
which were relayed to the other expert through legal
counsel, and then met with the other valuator to review
our questions and concerns.
After the meeting, we were satisfied that within tolerable
limits set by our client, the assessment of value of the
business-owning spouses’ private corporation was
reasonable and provided a solid basis with which to settle
their equalization. Our client was able to move on with
the comfort (and knowledge) that she was treated fairly
through this stage of settling the affairs between her and
her husband.
